?The two-day Olympic Solidarity/Olympic Council of Asia Regional Forum came to a close on Thursday (May 8) at the Regency Intercontinental Hotel in Manama, Bahrain.
The forum was attended by representatives of three Games organising committees, who presented detailed information on three major Games to be held in 2014.
They are the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in September-October, the Second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, in August and the 4th Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand, in November.
After a minute of silence for victims of the South Korean Ferry tragedy, 2014 Incheon Asian Games Organising Committee International Relations Department’s NOC Services Manager Sungsik Cho made the first presentation in which he gave detailed updates on the Games.
His presentation featured a number of topics, including accreditation registration, which ends on May 30 and takes approximately one month for approval.
As for the media accreditation, Cho said the closing of online accreditation registration is on May 20, while an NOC services centre has also been prepared to unify operational NOC services for better participation in the Asian Games.
He also outlined other details on the sports entries, arrival and departure system, logistics and customs, NOC meetings – (Delegation registration meting and Chef de Mission meetings), athletes and media village, transport, accommodation, opening and closing ceremonies, protocol, medical services, doping control, IT communication services and NOC rate card.
Late on, Sports Authority of Thailand’s International Cooperation Division director Nittaya Kerdjuntuk spoke about her nation’s preparations to host the Fourth Asian Beach Games in Phuket.
Nittaya said 43 NOCs and nearly 3,700 athletes have submitted their entries to the organizing committee, noting that the last date for accepting registration by number is June 30, while registration by name will be open until August 31. Registration process approval may take upto 15 days.
Other points highlighted by Nittaya were the inclusion of three new events – jiu jitsu, squash and sambo wrestling – to the sports programme of the games, as well as the availability of medical services and doping control at the Games village.
The third and last presentation was for the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, in which organizing committee’s International Relations Department deputy director Xiaojia Tong gave his remarks about the progress report as a build up to the Games.
It included the chef de mission seminar, which took place from March 26 to 28, when 266 representatives of 198 NOCs and 22 ICC officials shared their comments and suggestions.
Xiaojia also noted the Nanjing Youth Cultural Festival, held from March 22 to 30, the Nanjing Youth Ambassadors Seminar from March 24 to 28, and also referred to the delegation registration process – with online accreditation system closed on April 30, while the offline accreditation should be made by May 10, 2014.
Addressing the NOC delegates at the end of the two-day forum, Manager of the OCA’s Asian Games department Haider Farman said: “We would like the participation delegations to double check the eligibility of their athletes before signing them up for the Games. Athletes holding passports from other countries will not be able to take part”.
Farman also urged the NOCs not to register for the team sports draw unless they are sure of taking part in any particular sport, or financial and administrative penalties will be imposed.
In addition to representatives of the NOCs’ representatives, the concluding remarks were also witnessed by Olympic Solidarity’s athletes programmes section manager Olivier Niamkey, OS/OCA Regional Forum Organising Committee chairman Nawaf Abdulrahman, Bahrain Olympic Committee acting general secretary Abdulrahman Askar.
Both Askar and Niamkey received commemorative gifts from Iraqi NOC director general Jazaer Al Sahlani in an appreciation to their efforts in organizing and presenting this regional forum.
