?Bahrain’s national handball team have touched down in Incheon, in South Korea yesterday (September 16) ahead of the 17th edition of the Asian Games, scheduled to take place from September 19 to 4.
The nationals, who emerged runners-up at this year’s Asian Championship in Bahrain, are being coached by Algerian tactician Salah Bouchekriou, who named his 16-member squad after the team’s final training camp held in Slovenia recently.
The team was received on arrival by Bahrain delegation member, Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) International Affairs manager and administrator Fajer Jassim, who has already made all arrangements in regards to the accommodation and transports.
The administrative and technical delegation consist of assistant coach Essam Abdulla, manager Fahad Al Khathlan, in addition to Ismail Baqer, Ahmed Al Najem, Gorazd Zuzek and Nenad Damjanovic.
There are countries lined-up for the men’s handball competition. Bahrain will play in a three-nation Group ‘A’, which also features Saudi Arabia and Mongolia.
Group ‘B’ comprises Iran, Kuwait and Hong Kong, Qatar, China, Oman and the UAE were placed in Group ‘C’, while Group ‘D’ consists of Japan, India, Chinese Taipei and host nation Korea.
Bouchekriou will pin hopes on a number of Bahrain’s top handball players such as Hussain Al Sayyad, Jaffer Abdulqader, Mahdi Madan, Sadeq Ali, Mahmood Abdulqader and goalkeeper Mohammed Abdulhussasin, to name a few.
Others spearheading the team are Hassan Shehab, Jassim Radhi, Hassan Al Samahiji, Hussain Baboor, Jassim Al Salatna, Mohammed Al Maqabi, Ali Mirza, Mohammed Mirza, Ali Abdulqader and Ali Eid.
Bahrain is sending 120 athletes and officials, representing eight sports disciplines – athletics, equestrian, triathlon, shooting, handball, sailing, cycling and bowling, as they gear up to make their 11th appearance in this prestigious continental gathering.
