?The Bahrain Olympic Committee’s (BOC) sports affairs directorate recently announced its hosting of different sports events in 2014.
The decision was part of the BOC strategy, which focuses on motivating sports federations to bring a variety of sporting events to the Kingdom.
Acting General Secretary of the committee Abdulrahman Askar stressed the strategic importance of hosting various sports competitions in Bahrain, in terms of strengthening the reputation on the sports map, in addition to enhancing the opportunities for national teams to achieve decent results in those sports competitions.
Askar said the BOC is keen to implement the directives of Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and president of the Bahrain Olympic Committee to host regional, continental and global sporting events, noting his support to attract major international competitions.
Askar also lauded the efforts and follow-up of Shaikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, General Secretary of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and vice-president of the Bahrain Olympic Committee to issues related to hosting any sports event.
He stressed the importance of the continued cooperation between the Olympic Committee and sports federations in order to provide various success factors for future championships, thus showing the civilized image of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The BOC’s Sports Affairs sent letters to the sports federations to inform them on all the approved events in 2014. They include the Seventh Bahrain Open Junior Table Tennis Championship, to be held from February 24 to 28, and the 12th Men’s and Eighth GCC Women’s Festival from March 15 to 19.
Other events include Asian Optimist Championship from March 28 to April 6, Asian Junior Volleyball Championship in October, GCC Checkers Championship from August 15 to 22, GCC Weightlifting Championship in October, 13th GCC Swimming Championship, 13th GCC Bowling Championship in October, Bahrain round of the GCC Cycling Tour in December, Al Bareh International Championship from June 19 to 23.
It’s worth noting that the Bahrain Olympic Committee has supported the Bahrain Handball Association to host the 16th Asian Men’s Handball Championship, which also acted as a qualifier for the 2015 World Championship.
