Bahrain women’s basketball team will face a new challenge at the next GCC Women’s Games in Muscat. The fourth edition of the Games is scheduled to take place from March 8 to 18.
The nationals hope to improve on their third place finish at the First GCC Women’s Games held in 2011 in Doha. They were also third in the previous edition of the games in Bahraini in 2013, which boosted the kingdom’s medal tally to a record 54 medals in all games.
This year, Bahrain will be sending 12 of its most prominent basketball players to compete with some of the region’s best in this 11-day event.
Coached by Fadhel Milad, the team will be relying on a number of rising players who guided Bahrain to their first-ever GCC Junior Championship title in 2012 in Doha.
Bahrain Basketball Association’s women’s committee chairman Talal Malalla said the team was chosen based on the players performance at the most recent GCC Championship in Kuwait.
Malalla noted that the majority of the team were graduated from the Talents Identification Programme, conducted by the General Organisation for Youth and Sports, while three players were chosen from Alba Club and one from Al Najma Club.
“The competition in the championship is wide open, all the participating teams will enter the event as favourite, especially Qatar, the UAE and Kuwait. We have prepared our team well for the tournament and I am confident we can finish in the top three,” said Malalla.
The Bahrain basketball team delegation to Muscat include Bahrain Handball Association member Abdulla Al Dakheel, coach Fadhel Milad, administrator Fatema Mohammed and physiotherapist Marco.
