?Bahrain were crowned overall champions in the men section and were second among women at the 16th Arab Junior Athletics Championships 2014, which came to an end on Saturday in Cairo, in Egypt.
The young Bahrainis faced fierce challenge from some of the Arab region’s rising athletes in this four-day event, held at Cairo International Stadium, taking home 29 medals in total.
Bahrain, who sent a 43-member delegation to Egypt, put up a spirited show on the concluding day of the championship and took 10 medals in the in the boys section, including seven gold, two silver and two bronze.
They finished ahead of host nation Egypt and Algeria, who came second and third, respectively.
Bahrain’s gold medals were won by Abbas Abu Baker (200m), Ali Khamis (400m hurdles), Abdi Ali (800), and the Bahrain relay team (400mx4) in the boys section.
In the girls section, Bahrain finished second with 19 medals, including eight gold, eight silver and three bronze.
Salwa Eid (200m), Dalil Abdulqadir (1,500m) and Bahrain relay team (400mx4) were also among the Bahraini winning athletes.
The championships hosed some 500 young male and female athletes from 14 Arab countries competing in 22 contests.
They are Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Lebanon, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq. Djibouti, Oman, Yemen, Palestine, Algeria, Libya and hosts Egypt.
