?High-ranking sportsofficialsfrom the Bahrain Olympic Committee yesterday (November 6) have reached Bangkok to attend the general assembly meeting and other functions of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).
BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar, along with committee sports advisor Abduljalil Asad, are among delegates from all 204 members of the ANOC attending the general assembly.
The meetings, to be held over two days, culminate a week-long gathering, which started last Tuesday (November 4).
This year’s General Assembly will take on added significance as all nine of our ANOC commissions and working groups presented their strategic plans on how ANOC can continue enhancing its service to the National Olympic Committees.
In addition to the ANOC General Assembly, the inaugural Gala Awards Dinner night, where top performing athletes and National Olympic Committees from London 2012 and Sochi 2014 will be honoured, is also lined up.
The highlights of this gathering also include the elections of the President and the Senior Vice President of the ANOC, as present president Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah is favourite to win a second term.
Sheikh Ahmed, along with IOC President Thomas Bach and IOC Honorary President Jacques Rogge will also attend the celebrations along with around 1,200 members of the global Olympic Movement. The meetings of the ANOC commissions and working groups were also part of the meetings calendar.
Early on, a terms of reference and “tool kit” was confirmed in order to guide NOCs in how best to organise individual Athletes’ Commissions. This includes a template and check list concerning specific areas – including agendas, budgets and questionnaire templates – with the full document to be posted online on the ANOC website.
Meetings of the Juridical, International Relations, and Finance and Audit Commissions, as well as the Events Working Group were also included in the programme.
On Wednesday, a meeting of the ANOC Medical Commission, as well as of the Olympic Solidarity group, along with an ANOC Executive Council Meeting was chaired by Sheikh Ahmad.
All five continental associations had a meeting yesterday, with the Pan American Sports Organization holding an Extraordinary General Assembly following the postponement of the meeting in September due to President Mario Vázquez Raña being ill.
The ANOC was established in June 1979 during the Constitutive General Assembly in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Over the last 35 years, the number of National Olympic Committees (NOCs) whose interests ANOC represents has risen to 204.
ANOC is administered from its headquarters in the Olympic Capital, Lausanne, where it has been based since June 2010. When the ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah was elected in April 2012 his stated objective was to reform, modernise and professionalise the organisation in order to better serve the needs of the world’s NOCs.
Under Sheikh Ahmad’s visionary leadership, ANOC has strived to protect and promote the collective interests of the NOCs by delivering an unprecedented level of assistance and support. ANOC also aims to build and strengthen the relationships between the NOCs and the Olympic Family for the benefit of the entire Olympic Movement.
