?Bahrain’s karate members yesterday (Sep. 24) bowed out of the Third Islamic Solidarity Games, being held in Palembang, in Indonesia.Mohammed Al Shaikh and Bashar Al Sangar were unable to progress in their respective men’s karate competitions while facing more experience opponents.In his opener, Al Shaikh put on a superb show and scored an impressive 6-0 win over a fighter from Brunei Dar Al Salam to qualify for his next stage battle against World champion Majdi Mamdooh of Egypt.In this clash, Al Shaikh started well and took a surprising 3-0 lead. But with 40 seconds remaining, the Bahraini conceded his fourth warning and thus was eliminated from the tie.The decision was much to the relief of his opponent Mamdooh, who was crowned world champion in the most recent world championship in France, as he progressed into the competition’s next round.Bahrain’s other representative Al Sangar, meanwhile, made an early exit despite his brave performance against a Kuwaiti fighter, whom he lost to 1-2 to end Bahrain’s bid in karate events.The team , coached by Mohamed Larbi Boumezbeur, started their campaign in karate last Monday when two women players battling for glory.Sara Al Sabah won her first kata fight against her Palestinean opponent 5-0, but lost her next clash to an competitor from Morocco 4-1.In the same event, Bahrain’s other entrant Noora Ahmed lost her first two encounters to an Indonesian participant 0-4 before going down 0-9 to an Azerbaijan opponent to crash out of the tournament.Bahrain is also competing in athletics and taekwondo. The taekwondo team have been training for three days before the competitions start on September 28.The taekwondo team is being managed by Tawfeeq Nuwaiser of Jordan who named five of their best martial arts fighters.They are Hamad Al Binkhalil, Hesham Al Hashimi, Fahad Al Bosta, Mohammed Ahmed and Fajar Al Binali, who is due to join the team training in the next few days. The athletics delegation has also arrived in Palembang and began training yesterday. The team, comprising coach Vladimir, administrators Saad Al Buainain, Mohammed Hassan and physiotherapist Eid Hassan, will be spearheaded by 11 athletes.They are former world champion Maryam Jamal, Yousef Kamel, Ali Belal, Mimi Gebregeiorges and Shitaye Habtegebrel, Ali Khamis, Mahboob Hassan, Dejenee Mootumaa, Genzeb Regasa, Tareq Taher and Mohammed Yousef. The athletics event is scheduled to take place from September 25 to 29.Around 1,759 athletes and 624 officials are taking part in this 10-day event, which concludes on October 1. It’s being organized under the slogan, “Unity and Harmony”.There are 13 sports that will be competed. The Sports are Athletics, Aquatic-Swimming, Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Karate, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball Indoor, Volleyball Beach, Weightlifting, and Wushu.Participating nations are Algeria, Azerbaijan, Brunei Darussalam, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Indonesia, Guyana, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, the UAE and Malaysia.
