??Bahrain look to secure a new medal at the 18th Asian Games, being held in Jakarta and Palembang, today (Monday), when they take on Japan in the handball championship semi-finals at Gor Popki Cibubur sports hall.
The nationals made it to this stage after winning all their previous matches in the competition. Bahrain kicked off their campaign winning top spot in the main round robin stage with wins over Iran, South Korea and Hong Kong.
Bahrain, coached by Aron Kristjansson from Iceland, will relay on their goalkeeper Mohammed Abdulhussain, who showed some impressive skills in the team’s matches earlier in the tournament.
Kristjansson will also bank on Mohammed Abdulreda, Hasan Madan, Mohammed Mirtza, Mohammed Habib, Ali Mirza, Hasan Al Samahiji, Bilal Basham and Husain Al Sayyad.
Meanwhile, Nijad Al Gosaibi crashed out of the jiu jitsu medal race. He won his last-16 round fight in the men’s under-77kg against Abdul Rehman of Pakistan 100-0, but lost out to Erkhbayar Batkhuyag of Mongolia 0-100 later in the quarter-finals.
In shooting, Maryam Hassani and Hasan Mohammed were ranked 16th and 17th, respectively in the shotgun skeet event, while Abdulla Janahi is presently eighth after six races on the third day of his Laser Standard sailing with 42 points in total and 33 net points.
Elsewhere, Olympic Council of Asia president Shaikh Ahmed Al Fahd Al Subah received Bahrain Olympic Committee board member and Bahrain chef de mission Bader Nasser at his residence in Jakarta.
Shaikh Ahmed welcomed Nasser and commended the efforts of the administrative delegation of Bahrain at the games, and the contributions of Bahrain athletics, led by Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the first vice chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and Bahrain Athletics Association president.
On his part, Nasser conveyed the greetings of Shaikh Khalid to the OCA and its support to all national Olympic committees across the continent, and received a special gift from the council on this occasion.
BOC board members Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa and Abdulaziz Al Khayyat have touched down in Jakarta to attend the 18th Asian Games activities. They were welcomed on arrival by Bahrain ambassador to Indonesia Dr Mohammed Ghassan Shaikho, other embassy representatives and Bahrain delegation members.
