?BAHRAIN took two more medals yesterday (Sep. 28) at the Third Islamic Solidarity Games, being held in Palembang, in Indonesia.The nationals won a silver and a bronze medal in two different sporting disciplines on the seventh day of the Games.On the fourth day of athletics event, Mohammed Yousef gave Bahrain its fifth medal at the Games after coming second in the men’s triple jump.Yousef’s best attempt was 15.90 metres to snatch the silver medal for Bahrain. The competition’s gold medal was won by a Moroccan athlete, whose best attempt was 16.90m.Bahrain’s other medal yesterday was won by taekwondo national team member Fajer Al Binali, who clinched the Women’s Poomse championship bronze.Fajer completed the event in third place as she shared the bronze medal with Nada Izzat, while Iran’s Maleki Aderani Nastaran notched the competition’s gold medal against Defia Rosmaniar of Indonesia, who came second.Bahrain could have added to their overall medal tally yesterday when Mimi Belete and Genzeb Shumi bowed out of the women’s 1,500m final after coming fourth and seventh, respectively.Belete completed this challenging event in four minutes and 21.10 seocnds, finishing behind Morocco’s gold medalist Rabab Arafi (4:19:27) and her compatriot Siham Hilal (4:19.79), who claimed the silver, and ahead of Shumi (4:27.28).Shitaye Eshete Mubarak opened Bahrain’s account for Bahrian as she took the women’s 10,000m gold. Tareq Mubarak Taher and Hassan Mahboob claimed a bronze each in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase and men’s 10,000m, respectively.Former World champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal then added another medal to Bahrain’s tally by coming on top in the women’s 5,000m.Bahrain is competing in Indonesia with an 11-member athletics squad. Thy also lined-up taekwondo and karate teams for the Games.This 10-day Islamic Solidarity Games, which concludes on October 1, is being held under the slogan “Unity and Harmony”.Around 1,759 athletes and 624 officials are taking part in the Games, featuring 13 sports. They are athletics, aquatics swimming, archery, badminton, basketball, football, karate, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, volleyball beach, weightlifting and Wushu.Participating nations are Algeria, Azerbaijan, Brunei Darussalam, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Indonesia, Guyana, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, the UAE and Malaysia.The first edition of the Games was held in 2005 in Saudi Arabia. The second event was cancelled after it had been originally scheduled to take place in Tehran in October 2009. Azerbaijan will host the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in 2017.
