The first of its kind sport arbitration centre in the GCC will be launched soon in Bahrain, the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) announced yesterday (Saturday).
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports assistant general secretary and BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar revealed the news at his meeting with Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) member Dr Abdulla Al Hayyan of Kuwait at the committee premises in Seef.
Askar assured that the committee has reached the final stages to launch the GCC Sport Arbitration Centre, which is an initiative of Majesty King Hamad Representative for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council chairman and BOC president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
The BOC general secretary said this initiative was also approval by their highnesses presidents of National GCC Olympic Committees in an attempt to provide a regional arbitration centre to solve sports disputes.
Furthermore, Askar made a presentation on the proposed structure of the GCC Sport Arbitration Centre as well as its regulations and procedures related to pleadings.
He also commended Dr Al Hayyan role at the CAS, an international quasi-judicial body established to settle disputes related to sport through arbitration.
On his part, Dr Al Hayyan lauded the initiative of Shaikh Nasser to establish a sport arbitration centre in the GCC, and would submit this wish to CAS in order to bless this idea and support it.
