The Ride Begins...

The renowned equestrian tradition of Bahrain has been further enriched with the formation of the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (BREEF). It was because of the unrelenting efforts and futuristic vision of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa who opened a new dimension for the benefit of the riders and their horses of the country. Today, the riders of Bahrain have carved a niche for themselves to compete in brilliant and enthralling events ranging from Endurance, Show Jumping, to Dressage.

BREEF was established as per the ministerial decree issued by General Organization for Youth and Sports on 19th March 2003. Besides being the founder patron of BREEF, His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa leads the equestrian excellence of Bahrain as the dynamic Head of the Royal Team representing the Kingdom in both National and International Equestrian and Endurance championships. The Federation is the sole authority for organizing all equestrian activities, games and events, continuing the vibrant activities of its predecessor, the Bahrain Equestrian Association. BREEF is the member of International Equestrian Federation (FEI), Switzerland since 1985, member of Asian Equestrian Association, Japan since 1989 and the member of Pan-Arab Equestrian Federation, Qatar since 1990.

A Track Of Clear Cut Goals...

BREEF has well defined its goal as: "To upgrade the Endurance, Show jumping and Arabian horse activities in the Kingdom of Bahrain."

The Equestrian sport is unique in its beauty and grace. The combination of rider and horse sanctifies  concentration and power. Here, the woman is equal to man in execution. It provides emotion and excitement that no other sport incites. The horse has the muscles; the rider has the control. Together they are two athletes competing as a team. BREEF co-ordinates both of them, bring them to the big stage, stay with them right from the start to the finish, take them beyond with excellent infrastructure and technical guidance.

Bahrain's Legacy Of Endurance Horse Sport

Undoubtedly, endurance riding is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. The Kingdom of Bahrain made a mark and brought this sport in reality to its soil on 7th April 2000.

History states that it was the initiative taken by His Majesty the King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who instructed the conjoined riders of Bahrain and the UAE to organize the Bahrain International Endurance Horse Riding Championship as two separate races, one for Bahrainis and the other for UAE riders. The distance was 120 KM. The aim was to create a pool of knowledge for the participants, help them to realise their pitfalls and explore their potentials. The world famous rider, His Highness  Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was the winner from the UAE Riders. Amongst the Bahraini riders, Shaikh Salman bin Saqer Al Khalifa reached first place. Inspired by the success of the first international championship, the Endurance sport in the Kingdom of Bahrain bloomed into a new season with the start of the First Endurance Season Ride on the 7th of October 2004. The ride benefitted the new entrants as well as the top brass with two categories provided to them, the 80 KM for Adults and Junior, and the 60 KM for Qualifiers (Solely for New Entrants into the fascinating sport).

Since then, the Kingdom of Bahrain has witnessed a tremendous increase in equestrian events being hosted in the country.

Moreover, in honour of H.M. The King and the valiant contributions made by Him to the FEI equestrian sport of Endurance in Bahrain, the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (BREEF) has consistently organized the H.M. The King's Cup Endurance Ride Championship each year.

Equestrian Show Jumping & Bahrain

The Show Jumping sport was introduced in the Kingdom as early as 1976 by the Modern Pentathlon team of the Bahrain Defense Force. In the year 1986, the Safria Team was established for representing the Kingdom of Bahrain in both the military and civil championships. The sole aim of every show Jumping rider is to qualify to one of the planet's most brightest events - FEI World Cup™ Jumping Finals.

An FEI World Cup Qualifier is a show jumping competition that is sanctioned by the international equestrian federation (Federation Equestre Internationale or FEI) as a means to qualify for the FEI World Cup™ Jumping Finals. The FEI World Cup™ Jumping is not a series with an overall winner, like World Cup events or other sports. Here, the riders who are registered with the FEI through their individual national Federations, qualify to the World Cup Final through their appropriate "leagues" representing various geographic regions. These geographic regions constitute a qualifying league, and the number of riders who qualify from each league, are determined by the number of world-ranked riders who are "domiciled" there. The Kingdom of Bahrain, falls under the FEI World Cup™ Arab League which includes all GCC and the Middle East Nations.

All our international events in the FEI equestrian sport of Show Jumping are hosted as a tribute to the rich heritage and magnanimous guidance of H.M. The King. So far, the Kingdom of Bahrain has organized and hosted the following international events in Show Jumping,

Arabian Horses & Horse Shows in Bahrain…

Bahrain boasts pure bred Arabian horses. Ironically, our history states that, King Suleiman bin Daud (aka. King Solomon, Son of David), who was the greatest horse owner in his days, spent much time admiring his horses.  Every day he had them paraded for him.  He admired them to such an extent that he had no time for his prayers.  Then one day he realised that in the time spent with his horses he had completely forgotten to worship God. Repenting and wanting to make up with God for his neglect, King Suleiman ordered all his horses to be killed.  Five mares, one of them in foal, escaped the slaughter to the desert, where the mare gave birth to a colt foal.  When the colt grew up he mated with the other mares and from these horses descended the pure (asil) breed of horse.

The five mares were; Kuheilah, Obeyah, Dahmeh, Shuwaimeh and Saqlawieh.  They received their names in this manner; one mare had very dark lined eyes, like women who paint their eyelids with kohl, so she was called KOHEILAH.  One day when running, carried her tail so high it looked like an abayah (cloak) so she was called OBEYAH.  One was very dark (duhm) in colour so she was called DAHMEH.  One had a birthmark (shama) on her neck so she was called SHUWAIMEH. And one had a way of kicking (saqla) her heels in the air when galloping, so she was called SAQLAWIEH.

Best Known Horse Family In Bahrain...

The Dahmeh strain, historically the best known horse family in Bahrain, was prolific and famous in the 19th century, but had diminished to one mare in 1928. Bahrain lost the strain briefly when this mare was sent to Fahad bin Abdulla Al-Jiluwi for his pacification campaign against the Ajman tribe. When King Abdul Aziz Al-Saud heard of the loss of El Dahmeh, he promptly sent a replacement to Shaikh Sulman bin Hamad (1895 - 1961) who was very fond of the Dahmeh strain. The mare was referred to in Bahrain as Dahmeh El Malek . Another replacement was sent by Shaikh Abdulla Jassim Al-Thani of Qatar, Dahmeh El Shagara.

Dahmeh El Malek was mated to one of Shaikh Hamed's stallions and gave birth to a filly, bint Dahmeh El Malek, and then she was sent to Shaikh Ahmed bin Jaber,of Kuwait. Dahmeh El Shagara was a good producer. She was the dam of Dahman Alawwal (by Mlolshaan Speckled). Dahmeh Tawile, a daughter of Dahmeh El Shagara was the dam of Dahman Althaani (foaled 1962) who served at stud till his accidental death in 1977. Today this rare strain is represented by Dahmeh El Shagara's great granddaughter Dahmeh Yaamiah 273 and her daughter Dahmeh Umm Wajnah 821.

The widely popular Arabian Horses have several major organizations controlling the legacy of Arabian Horse Shows across the world, World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO), European Conference of Arab Horse Organizations (ECAHO), Arabian Horse Organization (AHO) are one such organizations among them. Only the WAHO is credited with the responsibility of protecting the integrity of the world's Arabian studbooks,  preserve, improve and maintain the purity of the blood of horses of the Arabian breed and to promote public interest in the science of the breeding of Arabian horses.

The Kingdom of Bahrain through the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation are affiliated to the European Conference of Arab Horse Organizations (ECAHO) and Arabian Horse Organization (AHO).

Furthermore, the Kingdom of Bahrain has witnessed several Arabian Horse Shows that were organized by us under the patronage of H.M. The King and while offering tribute to the Late H.H. Sh. Faisal Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who showered love and compassion for pure bred Arabian Horses.
